There’s a big difference between the two cruise itineraries you’ve mentioned. A Hawaii sailing is mostly days “at sea”, (as many as 6!), while a Caribbean cruise is mostly days “in port”.

Royal Caribbean and Celebrity both have one-way cruises from the West Coast to Hawaii (or in reverse). The cruises are a little longer than than a week however, and aside from cruising around the islands once you get there, there are no ports between the West Coast and Hawaii.

Almost all Caribbean cruises return to the port they leave from, unless they’re “repositioning” cruises - that’s when the cruise company wants to move the ship from one market to another. An example of that is the Royal Caribbean “Radiance of the Seas. She spent the entire summer doing Alaska cruises, then did a Hawaii cruise, then came from the West Coast to Florida by doing a Panama Canal cruise. Now she’s doing 1-week Caribbean cruises.

They can give you lots of information about different islands and so forth and should be up to date on weather and local agendas plus they have better price breaks; in all actuality, they booked my cruise cheaper than I could have Check it out! If you are young, you might look into working on a cruise to find out more about it. Do you have any special knowledge or skills that would be of valuable to a cruise ship company? Entertainment is obviously one aspect, and they serve meals and drinks constantly, so either cooking or serving would be valid, if you worked in a posh restaurant. Housekeeping is done with dignity, and nobody works all that hard on a cruise ship. But something which interacts with the passengers is the best way to find out what it’s really like.

You might also look into special “theme” cruises, if you have any special knowledge there. Clubs or groups of various kinds put together cruises with special interests, so that, for example, if you are a knowledgeable collector, you might do a presentation and be part of an elite of traders for a cruise ship. Or give lectures and demonstrations in a hobby or activity.

If you have enough money that the idea of working for a cruise bothers you, then take those same suggestions and look to the special interest cruises. I don’t think it’s where they go so much as what they are like on the open water.
