I’m going to Hawaii, flying out of San Diego in May. Were going on a Hawaiian cruise. Do I need a passport?

No, you will still be in the USA.

    Not if you’re an American.

Just bring some suntan lotion, and twice as much money as you think you’ll need.

No, it hurries things along but not necessary.

If you are an American and not leaving the United States, then you do not need one. Have fun while in our great state of Hawaii.

    Required Documentation

Identification required for a Hawaiian Islands cruise

U.S. and Canadian citizens must (1) provide proof of citizenship and (2) proof of identity to board Hawaiian Island cruises.

    (1) Proof of citizenship consists of a passport only; YOU MUST HAVE A VALID PASSPORT TO SAIL

    (2) Proof of identity can be one of the following:
    • Valid driver’s license
    • Government identification card including photograph and physical description
    • For children ages 6 to 17 a school ID card is acceptable.

NOTE: Permanent residents of the United States are required to carry their Alien Resident Card (ARC) for boarding. A child traveling with an adult who is not their parent or legal guardian must possess a notarized parental/guardian consent letter that authorizes the minor to travel, and that further authorizes medical treatment in case of an emergency.

To my knowledge, the only time you will need a passport is if your cruise leaves the Hawaiian Islands. However, there are always new rules and regulations. Contact your cruise line, they will let you know exactly what you need.
