how much cash do i need?
Cutie asked:
How much cash do i need on a 15 day cruise to Hawaii? I would rather use my Visa card whenever possible, I get nervous about carrying cash. Its through Holland America if that matters.
I think 100 a day is a bit much for cash, considering most stuff I can put on my card. I’ve already paid for the excursions, and I have money already set aside for tips.

I normally take about $100 a day spending cash for a cruise. I normally don’t spend too much on the ship but I will spend more for the excursions.

I wouldn’t carry more than $100, in $20 bills in cash on a trip. Actually, I wouldn’t carry any cash, but that would be the most.

When you buy stuff on the ship (like drinks or souvenirs in the shops or when you sign up for shore excursions) you use your cruise card (which is also your room key). All the charges go on your credit card. So you only need cash for tips (at the end of the cruise – they give you envelopes) and anything you buy onshore.

You aren’t leaving the US, so you shouldn’t have much trouble using your credit card anywhere, just like here. bring $500 in cash and $500 in travelers checks. Also bring your debit card just in case you need to get cash from an ATM. Use the safe in your room to store most of it and keep a couple hundred in cash and checks on you when you’re out.
IMPORTANT – buy a little waterproof case to keep your money in (camping section at walmart) you can keep asprin, money, receipts… in it. Also, bring cold medicine. Cruises don’t have decent cold medicines, and people are always catching bugs on long trips.

The only cash you will need will be for the casino. Everything else on the ship including shore excursions go on your ship account and gets charged to your credit card. Some ships even automatically add about $10 a day for tips to your account. If that is true then you don’t even need cash for tips. The only cash needed will be for items in the ports that you are unable to charge to your credit card. A couple hundred dollars per person should be enough. You can always get cash at an ATM.

I’d bring $100 just as back up money. Your cruise is paid for, on the ship you use your key to pay for things which is directly linked with your credit card and all your destinations should take VISA. The $100 is for emergencies or if you want to buy a soda while on land, it might be easier. Honestly, you could probably go the whole trip and not use cash, but its good to have some just in case.
