Stationed in Hawaii for 3 years?
Erin M asked:
My husband just got orders to Hawaii. We will be taking our dog. I don’t want to put her in the cargo area and she is to big to be considered “carry on”. She only weights about 40lbs.
I know Hawaii has quarantine rules, with we are following. However I couldn’t bear to put her in the cargo area. I have looked into cruise ships and I found nothing.
Can someone please help me find some way to get her there with out putting her in danger or causing her anxiety.
Thanks for your help!

You can fly her over after you arrive at your own expense.

There are only a few options for getting her there. You can cruise to Hawaii, but naturally the ships only leave from the West Coast, and it’s a four-day trip across the ocean. Even on a cruise ship, I’m not sure they’d give you any option other than cargo, so I think you might be stuck with that.
Ask your vet about medications you can give her. If you fly, there’s every reason to believe that she can be lightly tranquilized, and therefore anxiety-free, during the entire trip.
FYI, Hawaii’s quarantine regulations are the only reason I haven’t moved there yet, myself. I can’t stand the thought of my poor precious babies being stuck in a cage without me for so long!

Don’t worry about putting your dog in the cargo area of a plane your puppy won’t freeze to death or die of lack of oxygen because those areas are sealed. Normally, your dog will go in the front compartments because they have a heater coil running down the interior but make sure your puppy has water in a contain that can’t spill, some dry food and maybe talk to your vet about a light sedative that will help her keep calm without being completely anesthetized.
You can line the crate with puppy pads, so if she needs to *** she can and won’t have to sit in it OR you can buy some extra heavy duty depends and put a “panty” with it on her. The depends will lock away the piddle and you can purchase a doggy panty at any pet store…they will know what you mean when you ask for it. The ground crew will make sure she’s safe and you can check with the airline for their pet movement restrictions…most have an upper and lower temperature where your dog will not be taken to the apron because it would be dangerous.
I’ve flown many a kitty in my day during my career when animals weren’t allowed to be taken into the cabin. You will also be allowed to visit your dog, the baggage handlers will bring your dog up if you are worried and/or if she needs to be walked. I worked as a baggage handler for a major airline for a couple of months after the military and it was always a treat for us to get animals in the handling areas…they always got spoilt!
If you have any concerns go and speak to the airline before you book your flight and have them walk you through what will happen…and enjoy hawaii!!!

You may want to check another airlines for their weight criteria on pets. I know several people who were allowed to have their dogs in a small cage with them during the flight.
